Where Is My Refund? Tracking Your Federal Tax Return Status

If there is one question we hear most often after tax season wraps up here in the Orlando area, it is: "When will I get my money?" It is a fair question. Whether you are planning to reinvest in your business or save for a family vacation, knowing when those funds will arrive is important for your financial planning.

Recently, the IRS has aggressively shifted away from paper checks to enhance security and efficiency. By prioritizing electronic transfers, the agency aims to cut down on mail fraud and get money into taxpayers' hands faster. While paper checks are becoming less common, the good news is that tracking your refund has never been more transparent.

Using the "Where’s My Refund?" Tool

Regardless of whether you opted for a direct deposit into a single account or split the funds across several, you can track the progress of your return online. The Where’s My Refund? interactive tool on the IRS website provides access to your status nearly 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Timing depends heavily on how you filed:

  • E-file with Direct Deposit: You can usually check the status 24 hours after the IRS acknowledges receipt. Nine out of 10 taxpayers using this method typically receive refunds in fewer than 21 days.

  • Paper Returns: If you filed by mail, refund information generally won't be available until four weeks after mailing.

What You Need to Check Your Status

Before you log in to check your status, you will need to have your copy of your federal tax return handy. The system requires exact data to verify your identity. You must enter:

  • Your Social Security Number (or ITIN),

  • The specific tax year (options include 2025, 2024, and 2023),

  • Your filing status (e.g., married filing jointly, single, head of household), and

  • The exact refund amount in whole dollars as shown on your return.

Understanding the Status Messages

Once you submit your information, the tool will display one of three stages:

  • Return Received: The IRS has your return and is processing it.

  • Refund Approved: They have finished processing your return and are preparing to issue the funds.

  • Refund Sent: The money is on its way to your bank or mailbox. Note that it may take up to 5 days to appear in your bank account, or several weeks if a check was mailed.

Mobile Options and Accessibility

For those who prefer checking on their phone, IRS2Go is a free smartphone app available for both Apple and Android devices. It offers the same functionality as the desktop tool. For download information, visit IRS2Go.

Additionally, Where’s My Refund? is accessible to visually impaired taxpayers. It is compatible with the Job Access with Speech (JAWS) screen reader and supports Braille displays.

When Should You Call?

We know waiting can be stressful, but the Where’s My Refund? tool is updated every 24 hours—usually overnight. Checking multiple times a day will not yield new information. Furthermore, the tool provides the most up-to-date data available, so there is generally no need to call the IRS unless the tool specifically directs you to do so.

However, if the tool indicates a problem, or if you do not receive your refund within 28 days of the mailed date shown online, you may need to start a refund trace. If you encounter specific issues with your return or receive a notice that is holding up your refund, please contact our office. At Sandra Stearns CPA, we are here to help navigate these hurdles and ensure your tax season ends smoothly.
