As we welcome a new year, it's critical to be mindful of upcoming tax deadlines. January 2026 brings several key due dates for individual taxpayers, pivotal for estimated tax payments, tip reporting, and tax planning. Staying informed and planning accordingly can help you avoid potential pitfalls and optimize your financial outcomes.

January 2 - Schedule Your Tax Appointment

January 12 - Report Your December Tips

If you’re an employee who earns tips and received over $20 in December, you must report these to your employer by January 12. You may use IRS Form 4070 or prepare your own signed statement. Be sure to include your name, address, Social Security number, employer’s details, the period covered, and the tip amount.

Remember, your employer is responsible for withholding FICA and income taxes on these tips from your wages. If your wages are insufficient to cover these withholdings, the uncollected amounts will be reported on box 8 of your W-2 form, which you’ll need to reconcile when filing your returns.

January 15 - Estimated Tax Payment Deadline

This date marks the last opportunity to submit your fourth-quarter estimated tax payment for the 2025 tax year. Failing to meet this deadline means you must submit your 2025 return and pay all taxes owed by February 2, 2026, to sidestep penalties for underpayment.

Notes on Weekends & Holidays

Any deadline falling on a Saturday, Sunday, or federal holiday extends to the next business day. This ensures no surprises when calendars shift.

Extensions for Disaster Areas

If your area is declared a disaster zone, filing extensions may apply. Verify if your region qualifies by checking the pertinent websites: FEMA and IRS. Stay updated to make informed decisions regarding your tax obligations.
