Essential June 2026 Individual Tax Due Dates

Summer in Orlando is heating up, and as we approach the midpoint of the year, it is the perfect time to check in on your tax obligations. June brings a handful of important individual tax deadlines that entrepreneurs, tipped employees, and U.S. expats need to keep on their radar. At Sandra Stearns CPA, our team wants to ensure you stay ahead of the curve. Here is a breakdown of the key dates you need to know for June 2026.

Early June Deadlines: IRA Reporting and Employee Tips

June 1 is the final due date for IRA trustees to issue Form 5498. This form provides the fair market value (FMV) of your IRA as of December 31, 2025. This value is critical if you are age 73 or older in 2026, as it dictates your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) for the year.

Shortly after, June 10 serves as the monthly deadline for tipped employees. If you received more than $20 in tips during May, you must report them to your employer using IRS Form 4070 or a similar written statement. Your employer uses this report to calculate and withhold your FICA and income taxes. If your regular paycheck does not cover these taxes, the uncollected amount will be reported in box 8 of your W-2, and you will owe those taxes when you file your annual return.

June 15: Second Quarter Estimated Taxes

If you are a freelancer, small business owner, or have income not subject to withholding, June 15 is a major date. It is the deadline for your second-quarter estimated tax payment for the 2026 tax year. The U.S. operates on a pay-as-you-earn tax system, and falling behind can trigger an underpayment penalty, which is calculated quarterly based on the federal short-term rate plus three percentage points.

Fortunately, you can avoid this penalty through safe harbor payments. You will not face penalties if your federal underpayment is less than $1,000. Alternatively, you can meet one of two safe harbor thresholds: paying 90% of your current year's tax liability, or paying 100% of your previous year's tax liability. If your Adjusted Gross Income exceeds $150,000 (or $75,000 for married filing separately), that prior-year safe harbor jumps to 110%.

If your income has spiked this year due to the sale of property, stocks, or a large bonus, you should double-check your estimates. State rules often differ from federal guidelines, so please reach out to our office if you need help calculating your exact safe harbor amounts.

June 15: Deadlines for Expats and Military Personnel

If you are a U.S. citizen or resident alien living and working outside the United States and Puerto Rico, your 2025 income tax return and any taxes owed are due on June 15, 2026. Keep in mind that special extensions apply for individuals impacted by the terrorist attacks in Israel throughout 2024 and 2025, extending their deadline to September 30, 2026.

Need more time? You can file Form 4868 to extend your filing deadline to October 15. However, this only extends your time to file, not your time to pay. If you expect to owe, estimate the amount and pay it by June 15 to avoid late payment penalties and interest.

For military members serving in combat zones or qualified hazardous duty areas, the IRS grants an automatic 180-day extension after leaving the combat zone or concluding a qualifying hospitalization.

A quick logistical note: whenever a standard tax deadline falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the IRS automatically pushes the due date to the next business day.

Additionally, the IRS offers filing relief for taxpayers living in federally declared disaster areas. If your region is impacted by severe weather, you may have extra time to file and pay. You can verify whether your area qualifies for extended deadlines by visiting the FEMA declarations page and the IRS disaster relief page.
