Don't Lose Your 2022 Tax Refund: The April 15 Deadline is Approaching

If you skipped filing your 2022 tax return because life got busy, you might be leaving money on the table. The IRS estimates that over a million taxpayers still have unfiled returns from three years ago, representing roughly $1.5 billion in unclaimed refunds. If you belong in this group, the clock is ticking. You must file by April 15, 2026, or your hard-earned money permanently becomes U.S. Treasury property.

More Than Just Withholdings at Stake

Failing to file means you could lose out on more than just the taxes withheld from your paychecks. For instance, many low- to moderate-income families who missed the 2022 deadline might qualify for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). This refundable credit provides valuable financial relief. You might also be eligible for the refundable portions of child and education tax credits.

Rules for Filing Your 2022 Return

To claim your 2022 refund, your return must be properly addressed, mailed, and postmarked by April 15, 2026. Since late 2022 returns cannot be e-filed, paper filing is your only option. We recommend mailing it a few days early or visiting the post office to get it officially hand-stamped. Simply dropping it in a mailbox on deadline day is risky. Keep in mind, the IRS will hold your 2022 refund if you are also missing returns for 2020 and 2021. Furthermore, any refund will first be applied to outstanding IRS balances, unpaid child support, or federal debts like student loans.
