2026 Tax Filing Deadlines: Essential Steps for Individuals and Businesses

With April 15, 2026, quickly approaching, our team at Sandra Stearns CPA wants to make sure you are prepared. Whether you are a local business owner in the greater Orlando area or a family we support across the country, staying ahead of tax filing deadlines is essential for protecting your financial health.

Countdown to Tax Deadline

By this key date, you must either file your 2025 federal tax return and pay any owed taxes, or request an automatic extension while paying your estimated tax due. Let us look closely at a few other critical items tied to this mid-April cutoff.

What Else is Due on April 15, 2026?

  • Extensions do not buy you time to pay: If you file Form 4868 to push your filing date to October 15, this is strictly an extension to file, not to pay. You still need to estimate your 2025 balance and submit payment by April 15 to minimize penalties and interest.
  • Last chance for 2025 IRA contributions: You have until April 15 to fund a Traditional or Roth IRA for the 2025 tax year. This deadline applies even if you file an extension.
  • Expiring 2022 tax refunds: The IRS grants a three-year window to claim old refunds. If you still need to file an original or amended return for 2022, your absolute last day to secure that refund is April 15, 2026.
  • Foreign Bank and Financial Accounts (FBAR): If you held $10,000 or more in foreign accounts during 2025, your FBAR is due alongside your tax return. An automatic extension to October 15 applies if you miss the initial date, but accurate reporting is vital to avoid severe fines.
  • Q1 2026 Estimated Taxes: Business owners and freelancers, remember that your first quarterly estimated payment for 2026 is also due. We often base this on your 2025 liability, meaning some 2025 tax calculations are necessary even if your final return is on extension.
